Tooth extraction

  • It is not recommended to eat or drink for 2 hours after a tooth extraction.
  • It is not recommended to have a hot meal (e.g. hot soup) or to drink very hot coffee on the same day of a tooth extraction because it may cause the wound to bleed.
  • After removal of a tooth it is not recommended to rinse the wound as there may be medicine in the wound which will be rinsed out. Rinsing may also increase the risk of bleeding from the wound.

  • Do not apply a compress, especially a warm compress, on the wound!
  • To avoid swelling/oedema you may put a cold bag on the cheek in the area of the wound.
  • If the doctor has prescribed you a course of tablets or some other treatment, you must strictly follow the instructions.
  • The wound may ache after the effect of the anaesthesia has passed, which is normal. To reduce the pain, take over-the-counter painkillers (e.g. ibumax, ibuprofen, etc.).
