Mild and moderate periodontitis is present in around 40% of people. This is usually a chronic disease. During the course of the disease, the bone and connective tissue keeping the teeth attached to the bone are resorbed slowly. The symptoms characteristic to this disease develop during decades and if prevention and treatment is started late, the loss of bone may lead to receding of gums around the teeth causing the teeth to seem longer and become more sensitive. If the disease progresses, the patient may lose his or her teeth.
